Olunje Gwampi scored the match-winning try in the final minute of play on Monday to hand hosts Border a stunning 15-10 victory over the Valke at the annual Coca-Cola Under-18 Craven Week in East London.

The match was dead-locked at 10-10 with one minute left in the game before the Border winger dived in at the corner to score the final try of the match. Louis Nel and Mzwethu Kantu Mfenyana were the other try-scorers for the hosts while Otavio Raimiundo Fortuin and Ruaan Stephen Lerm crossed the try line for the Valke.

The Lions comprehensively defeated SWD 34-6 in the penultimate game of the afternoon. The Johannesburg side ran in four tries thanks to Andries Nicolaas Oosthuizen, Lincoln Gregory Koopman, Jean-Pierre le Grange and Louwrens Jacobus van Heerden and were solid on defence with the SWD’s only points scored via the boot of Jaco van Tonder, who kicked two penalties.

In the other matches of the day, Western Province outclassed Eastern Province 49 -15 and ran in seven tries to the three scored by the team from Port Elizabeth. Griquas defeated the Pumas 31-22, while the Griquas CD were also victorious in their 13 -11 win over Namibia in the first game of the day.

South African Rugby Union national selectors Peter Jooste, Ian McIntosh and SARU Manager of High Performance Herman Masimla were at the Border Rugby Stadium and will spend the week at the Coca-Cola Under-18 event spotting future talent to hopefully represent the Springboks in the future.

SA national coach Peter de Villiers also attended the Coca-Cola Craven Week along with SA Under-20 coach Eric Sauls.

SA Rugby in conjunction with the Chris Burger/ Petro Jackson Players’ Fund recently launched its rugby safety program BokSmart and Project Manager Dr Wayne Viljoen and SA Rugby Medical Manager Clint Readhead also attended day one’s action at the Border Rugby Stadium.
